National holidays, Līgo, and Jāņi in Latvia

Public holidays in Latvia are governed by the national statute on Holidays, Remembrance and Commemorative Days. The calendar marks national independence milestones, notably the Restoration of Independence (4 May) and Republic Proclamation Day (18 November), as well as the Midsummer celebrations of Līgo and Jāņi (23–24 June). When 4 May or 18 November falls on a weekend, the following working day is observed as a public holiday.

School term dates are established each academic year by Cabinet of Ministers regulations under the General Education Law. The school year features unified national breaks in autumn, winter, and spring, while students in graduation examination grades continue their term into June.
