Public holidays, Midsummer, and winter sports break in Sweden

Public holidays are established by the Public Holidays Act (Lag om allmänna helgdagar). When a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, intervening days are frequently observed as bridge days (klämdagar). School holiday dates are set by each municipality.

Public holidays in Sweden are defined by the Public Holidays Act, combining historical Christian feasts with secular traditions. National Day (6 June, Svenska flaggans dag) was made an official public holiday in 2005, replacing Whit Monday. Traditional celebrations such as Midsummer Day (Midsommardagen) and All Saints' Day (Alla helgons dag) are legally fixed to Saturdays within designated calendar windows, with Midsummer Eve and Christmas Eve widely treated as de facto non-working days.

School calendars are decided independently by each municipality (kommun) within the national School Act framework. To prevent overcrowding in ski regions, the one-week winter sports break (sportlov) is staggered across municipalities over four consecutive weeks in February and March (weeks 7 through 10).
