When to take leave in Scotland

What one, two or three days of leave get you:

Scottish bank holidays, Hogmanay, and local term dates

In Scotland, statutory bank holidays reflect distinct historical traditions. Following the Scottish Reformation (1560), the Kirk's General Assembly abolished traditional feast days in 1575, establishing Hogmanay (New Year) as the country's primary winter festival. As a result, Scotland observes 2 January as a statutory bank holiday alongside New Year's Day — Christmas Day was only recognised as a bank holiday in 1958 and Boxing Day in 1974.

In addition to statutory bank holidays, local councils designate local public holidays for their communities.

School term dates and mid-term breaks are set independently by each of Scotland's 32 local council education authorities.
