When to take leave in Cyprus

The calendar keeps two sets of national days because the island keeps two histories in it: two of them are Greece's and two are its own. Where those days come from as law is the harder question. The state fixes them for its own service and for the trades whose hours it legislates, and leaves everyone else's to be bargained, so the authoritative list is not a statute anybody can cite but the one the Republic's institutions publish for themselves — which is also why more than one version of it circulates. The banks keep a slightly different calendar again: they close on the Tuesday of Bright Week, which nobody else does, and work through Christmas Eve, which the rest of the public sector has off.

The school year is settled centrally and still comes out different in every village. Secondary lessons begin on the fifth working day of September rather than on a date, and the summer runs from the Thursday before the second-to-last Friday in June to the Friday before the second Monday in September — a set of rules about weekdays rather than a set of dates, so it lands somewhere new each year. Then each school files one further day with its district office, the feast of the saint of its own community, and Maronite schools may take St Maron's day in place of it. One school holiday follows a person rather than a date at all: the Archbishop's name day is one, and it moves when the Archbishop does.
