When to take leave in Denmark

What one, two or three days of leave get you:

Public holidays in Denmark follow the Evangelical Lutheran Church calendar and are defined by the Holiday Act, with retail stores closed under the Shop Closing Act. Paid time off is not guaranteed by general labour statute; under the Danish model, it is negotiated through collective agreements between unions and employers. Days such as Constitution Day (5 June), Labour Day (1 May), and Christmas Eve are not statutory public holidays, though many collective agreements treat them as full or half days off.

The holiday calendar dates back to the 1770 reform, which roughly halved the number of church feasts and consolidated regional penitential days into Great Prayer Day (Store Bededag). In 2023, the Folketing abolished Store Bededag as a public holiday starting in 2024. The school calendar is set locally: the Folkeskole Act fixes the start of summer holidays to the last Saturday in June, while autumn break (week 42), winter break (week 7 or 8), and all other term dates are decided independently by Denmark's 98 municipalities.
