Religious holidays, Fastnacht, and school calendar in Baden-Württemberg

In Baden-Württemberg, Maundy Thursday and Reformation Day (31 October) are recognised as religious church holidays rather than statutory public holidays, but state law explicitly orders all schools to close on both days. When the state replaced the Day of Repentance and Prayer with long-term care insurance in 1995, it preserved Whit Monday as a statutory holiday.

Carnival (Fastnet) days such as Rose Monday and Shrove Tuesday are ordinary working days under state law. There is no statewide carnival holiday, but schools frequently use their allocated flexible days off (bewegliche Ferientage) to close during the carnival week.
