Easter, Pentecost, and discretionary school days in Brandenburg

Brandenburg is the only German state where Easter Sunday and Pentecost Sunday are explicitly designated as statutory public holidays in their own right, rather than ordinary Sundays. This distinction is significant for employment: supplements for working on these days qualify as holiday supplements and are exempt from federal income tax at the higher holiday rate.

Carnival days like Rosenmontag are not statutory public holidays and are not covered by statewide school closures. Individual schools allocate their own discretionary days off (variable Ferientage), while general school holiday schedules are coordinated with neighboring Berlin.
