Public holidays and Orthodox paschal cycle in Greece

Mandatory public holidays are defined by national labour legislation, while regional governors may declare local holidays for patron saint feasts. School terms are determined centrally by presidential decree, with Easter holidays following the Orthodox paschal cycle.

Public holidays in Greece are established by national statutes, combining major religious feasts of the Orthodox liturgical cycle with national civic commemorations: 25 March (Independence Day and Annunciation), 28 October (Ohi Day), and Labour Day (1 May, governed by Law 4808/2021). When 1 May falls on a weekend, Holy Week, or Easter Monday, it is moved to the following working day by ministerial decree.

The school calendar is determined by presidential decree and ministerial circulars from the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, running from September to June with two-week vacations at Christmas and Easter and unified term dates across all primary and secondary schools.
