When to take leave in Greece

What one, two or three days of leave get you:

The 1966 decree that still governs rest in the private sector made only four days obligatory, and left Labour Day and the anniversary of the 28th of October to each employer's discretion. Everything above those four was added afterwards, and for most of the years between not by Parliament: the decree let the Minister of Labour appoint up to five further feasts a year, and it left untouched every extra day already granted by collective agreement or works rules, so the private-sector calendar grew a decision at a time until a 2021 statute wrote the longer list into law. The public services never waited on any of that. Their own list has stood since 1981 and is wider, which is why Good Friday — a day the 1966 decree treats only as a morning's closing for shops — is a whole day off for anyone the state employs.

Beneath the national list runs a layer no national calendar can carry. The 1966 decree already took for granted that each city keeps its patron saint's day; the 1981 law preserved the one day a year each region held for a religious or national occasion; and under the 2021 statute it is the regional governors, not the Minister, who declare a local holiday now. That same 1981 law can also manufacture a long weekend outright — a lone working day caught between two holidays may be declared a holiday itself, paid for by cutting back the half-days that close Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve at one o'clock. Schools go the other way entirely: their terms are fixed by decree for the whole country rather than left to region or school, and because the spring break opens on Holy Monday and closes on the Friday of Bright Week, it moves with Orthodox Easter.
