Public holidays and St. Brigid's Day in Ireland

Ireland's statutory public holidays are governed by the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997. In 2023, Saint Brigid's Day was added to the calendar (observed on the first Monday in February, or on 1 February itself when that falls on a Friday), marking Ireland's first public holiday named after a woman. Good Friday is not an official public holiday under Irish law, though many schools and businesses choose to close.

Core school holiday dates (Christmas, Easter, and autumn and spring mid-term breaks) are standardised nationally through Department of Education circulars. Secondary schools conclude classes before the June bank holiday ahead of state examinations (Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate), while primary schools run until late June.
