National holidays and public feast days in Malta

Public holidays in Malta are established by the National Holidays and Other Public Holidays Act. The calendar combines five National Days commemorating key turning points in modern Maltese history — Freedom Day (31 March), Sette Giugno (7 June), Victory Day (8 September), Independence Day (21 September), and Republic Day (13 December) — with traditional religious solemnities. When a public holiday falls on a weekend, employees are legally entitled to an additional day of annual leave.

The school calendar is regulated nationally by the Ministry for Education in consultation with educational unions, providing uniform term dates across state, church, and independent schools, structured around Christmas, mid-term, Easter, and summer vacations.
