Frisian language, fierljeppen, and Elfstedentocht

Fryslân (Friesland) is the only province with its own co-official regional language, West Frisian (Frysk), recognised in schooling, public administration, and courts. School term dates follow the North holiday region.

The province celebrates unique heritage traditions, including fierljeppen (canal pole vaulting), summer skûtsjesilen sailing regattas across the Frisian lakes, and the historic legacy of the 200-kilometre Eleven Cities Tour (Elfstedentocht).
