Limburg Carnival (Vastelaovend) and Sint-Maarten

In Limburg, the Burgundian Carnival (Vastelaovend) from Sunday to Tuesday before Ash Wednesday is the cultural tradition of the year. Schools throughout the province close for the entire week, with the regional spring break traditionally aligned with Carnival.

In Maastricht, Venlo, and Roermond, grand parades fill historic streets accompanied by traditional brass street bands (zaate hermeniekes). On 11 November, children celebrate Saint Martin (Sint-Maarten) with illuminated lantern parades.
