Municipal holidays and school calendars in Portugal
Statutory public holidays in Portugal are governed by the Labour Code (Código do Trabalho) and the 2004 Concordat with the Holy See, combining national civic commemorations (such as Freedom Day, Portugal Day, Republic Day, and the Restoration of Independence) with Christian religious holidays. In addition, every municipality observes its own local public holiday (feriado municipal), while the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and the Azores designate regional holidays celebrating their autonomy.
School calendars in mainland Portugal are established by ministerial dispatch, while Madeira and the Azores exercise regional autonomy to adopt their own educational schedules and holiday calendars.
