Dia dos Açores, Holy Spirit feasts, and Santo Cristo

The Day of the Autonomous Region of the Azores (Dia dos Açores) is celebrated on Whit Monday (Segunda-feira do Espírito Santo), the day following Pentecost Sunday. The regional holiday is rooted in the centuries-old Cult of the Holy Spirit, celebrated across all nine islands of the archipelago with traditional impérios chapels, crownings, and the communal sharing of holy spirit soups and sweet bread (massa sovada).

On São Miguel Island, the historic Festas do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres in Ponta Delgada (fifth Sunday after Easter) are the largest religious celebration in the Azores, featuring colourful natural flower carpets lining the city streets. School terms are regulated autonomously by the Regional Secretariat for Education of the Azores.
