When to take leave in Turkey

What one, two or three days of leave get you:

Act No. 2429 keeps the calendar in two articles. Republic Day opens at 13.00 on the 28th of October and runs through the 29th; three official festivals and three ordinary holidays stand in two lists beside it; and the bayram are written in with their lengths — Ramazan three and a half days from one o'clock on the eve, Kurban four and a half — so the half-day eve, the arife, is itself statutory. 1 May arrived by amendment in 2009 and Democracy and National Unity Day in 2016. A holiday that falls on a weekend stays there: nothing in the statute moves it or pays it back, and its one clause where a holiday and the weekend meet gives rather than takes — when a holiday ends on a Friday evening, the whole of the following Saturday is off, a Saturday being otherwise a half working day.

The bayram dates are calculated rather than waited for, and published many years ahead: Diyanet draws its calendars on whether the new crescent could be seen anywhere on earth, which is why countries that ask instead whether it could be seen from their own sky keep the same festival a day apart. The schools keep one national working calendar, issued afresh each year — the 2026-27 circular went out under the Minister of National Education's signature to all eighty-one provinces — and so the country keeps a single set of term dates.
