Public and school holidays in Austria
Austria has the same public holidays everywhere, but every state sets its own school terms. Pick one to see its dates, the weekdays they fall on, and the bridge days around them.
Public holidays in Austria are established at the federal level by the Arbeitsruhegesetz. The federal Schulzeitgesetz staggers the start of the school year and the February semester break across federal states to balance tourism and winter travel.

Public holidays and semester break in Austria
Public holidays in Austria derive from federal labour law and the 1933 Concordat with the Holy See, which recognised major Catholic feasts. Following a 2019 European Court of Justice ruling, Good Friday was replaced by a religion-neutral "personal holiday" (persönlicher Feiertag), allowing any employee to unilaterally select one day of their annual leave entitlement with advance notice.
The school calendar is structured by federal legislation. The February semester break (Semesterferien) originated during the 1973 oil crisis as an energy-saving measure and was made permanent to stagger winter holiday travel. Individual provinces also mark regional commemorative days, such as Carinthia's plebiscite anniversary (10 October), as school holidays.
