Josefitag and Herz-Jesu fires in Tyrol

The patron saint of Tyrol is Saint Joseph (Josefitag, 19 March). On this day, schools across Tyrol are closed and state government offices shut.

A unique tradition is Herz-Jesu-Sonntag (the third Sunday after Pentecost), when blazing mountain bonfires (Herz-Jesu-Feuer) are lit across the alpine peaks, commemorating the 1796 oath to defend the land against French invasion. The winter semester break falls in the second week of February.
