Day of the Flemish Community and Battle of the Golden Spurs

The Day of the Flemish Community is celebrated on 11 July, commemorating the 1302 Battle of the Golden Spurs (Guldensporenslag) near Kortrijk, where Flemish foot militias defeated the royal French knighthood. Flemish administrative services are closed on this community holiday.

Dutch-language schooling across Flanders and Brussels maintains the traditional Belgian academic calendar, with a full two-month summer holiday throughout July and August, single-week autumn and carnival breaks, and two-week vacations at Christmas and Easter.
