Public and school holidays in Switzerland
Switzerland has 4 public holidays everywhere. The rest change from one canton to the next, and so do the school terms. Pick one to see its dates, the weekdays they fall on, and the bridge days around them.
Only Swiss National Day (1 August) is fixed federally by the constitution; cantons determine all other public holidays under the Labour Act. Education is governed cantonally, with school holiday schedules set by cantonal or municipal authorities.

Public holidays and school calendars in the cantons
Under the Swiss Federal Constitution, the relationship between church and state is governed by the cantons, resulting in diverse holiday calendars across Switzerland. While 1 August (Swiss National Day) is the sole mandatory federal holiday, cantons may designate additional days equivalent to Sundays. Holiday calendars often reflect regional denominational traditions, with variations even existing across districts within cantons such as Fribourg and Aargau.
School calendars are likewise governed at the cantonal and municipal level. While federal constitutional frameworks coordinate school entry age and compulsory schooling structures, exact term dates and holiday periods are determined by each canton and its local school boards.
