Holidays and Silvesterchlausen in Ausserrhoden

The Reformed half-canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden follows the Protestant holiday calendar without Catholic feast days.

The canton is renowned for the living folk custom of Silvesterchlausen, celebrated on New Year's Eve (31 December) and on 'Old New Year's Eve' (Alter Silvester on 13 January, corresponding to 31 December in the Julian calendar) in municipalities such as Urnäsch and Waldstatt. School term dates are set by the Department of Education and Culture.
