Basel Carnival and public holidays

In the Canton of Basel-Stadt, public holidays reflect its Reformed heritage.

The central civic event is the Basel Carnival (Basler Fasnacht), which begins at precisely 04:00 on the Monday after Ash Wednesday with the Morgestraich with all city lights extinguished; during these 'three most beautiful days', public life halts and schools close for the entire week.
