Jeûne genevois and Escalade in Geneva

The Canton of Geneva observes unique historical holidays: the Jeûne genevois on the Thursday following the first Sunday of September (a historic cantonal fast day dating back to 1567, observed in solidarity following the 1572 St. Bartholomew's Day massacre) and the Restauration de la République on 31 December (marking the restoration of the Republic in 1813 following Napoleonic rule).

In December, Geneva celebrates L'Escalade (11–12 December), commemorating the defeat of the Duke of Savoy's troops in 1602. School terms are determined by the Department of Public Instruction.
