Festa della Bruna and Sfilata dei Turchi in Basilicata

In Basilicata, municipal celebrations boast centuries of tradition. In Matera, the Festa della Bruna has been celebrated on 2 July since 1389 in honour of the Madonna della Bruna, culminating in the ceremonial dismantling (strazzo) of the monumental papier-mâché triumphal carriage in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. In Potenza, Saint Gerard is honoured on 30 May, with the historic Sfilata dei Turchi parade taking place on its eve (29 May).
The school calendar is approved by the regional council of Basilicata, ensuring the statutory 200 days of classes while reserving closures for local patron saint days.
