San Giovanni Battista and maritime traditions in Liguria

In Liguria, patronal feasts are tied to maritime heritage. Genoa celebrates Saint John the Baptist (San Giovanni Battista, 24 June), historical patron of the Genoese Republic, with a solemn procession from San Lorenzo Cathedral to the Porto Antico for the blessing of the sea. La Spezia observes San Giuseppe (19 March) with a historic multi-day fair, and Savona celebrates Nostra Signora della Misericordia (18 March).

The school calendar is established by the Region of Liguria, scheduling term dates between September and June while providing for local patron saint holidays.
