Sicilian autonomy and patron saint festivals

Sicily celebrates the Festa dell'Autonomia Siciliana on 15 May, commemorating the 1946 royal decree granting special regional autonomy ahead of the Italian Republic.
Local patron saint festivals are among Italy's largest: Palermo honours Santa Rosalia (15 July) with the Festino, Catania celebrates Sant'Agata (3–5 February), and Syracuse honours Santa Lucia (13 December). The regional school calendar is established by the Sicilian Regional Department of Education.
