Canary Islands Day, island patronesses, and Carnival

Canary Islands Day (30 May) marks the first parliamentary session of the archipelago in 1983. Each of the main islands observes an official public holiday for its own patroness (such as Nuestra Señora del Pino in Gran Canaria on 8 September or the Virgen de Candelaria in Tenerife). In late winter, the historic Carnivals of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria bring island life to a standstill.

The Canary Islands Department of Education establishes the school calendar, incorporating island holidays and carnival breaks.
